Replacing a Failed Drive on TeraStation

NOTE: This article assumes the TeraStation is using a redundant RAID array. For steps on replacing a drive in a unit running either JBOD or RAID 0, please refer to the User’s Manual for your TeraStation.

1.       It is not necessary to shut down the TeraStation to replace a failed drive.

2.       On a desktop unit, unlock and open the front door of the TeraStation. For rackmount units, skip to step 3.

3.       Remove the failed drive. The failed drive’s status LED will be glowing red. Be certain to only remove the failed drive. Removal of a functioning drive could cause data loss. To remove the drive press the release button on the drive tray and pull the drive from the chassis. Refer to the illustration for your system type below.

4.       Insert the replacement drive with the lock open. Firmly press the drive into the chassis until it seats, then close the locking mechanism.

NOTE: Do NOT format the replacement drive! Doing so will prevent it from being used to rebuild the RAID array.

5.       If the TeraStation is set to automatically rebuild the RAID array the rebuild should start after the drive replacement. If it does not, press and hold the function button on the front of the TeraStation until the unit beeps (about 3 seconds).

6.       The rebuild process can be monitored in the user interface. The time required for the rebuild will vary depending on the size of the array and the workload on the unit.
