KB#000001 - Making Windows Vista PC's compatible with Buffalo NAS products

REGION: All

ISSUE: Vista incompatibility with Buffalo NAS products

CAUSE: Buffalo NAS products natively support NTLM. Since Vista by default only supports NTLMv2, users will have to make a change to Vista install for it to work with Buffalo NAS products.

PLATFORM(S): TeraStation NAS / LinkStation NAS

SOLUTION

Patch for Windows Vista PC users to be used with Buffalo NAS products

This patch for Windows Vista PCs makes them compatible with Buffalo NAS products.  This patch is installed on the users Vista PCs, not on the Buffalo NAS product.  Please unzip the file and read the README.txt file.

1.  Click on the link below and select LinkStation™ Gigabit product drop down menu.

http://www.buffalotech.com/support/downloads/

2.  Select the Windows Vista download under the utilities section.

**NOTE - This patch for Windows Vista PCs makes them compatible with Buffalo NAS products.  This patch is installed on the users Vista PCs, not on the Buffalo NAS product.  Please unzip the file and read the README.txt file.

Or do it manually - steps below

Open the control panel, make sure you're using the classic view, double click on "Administrative Tools"  There is an item "Local Security Policy"- open it.

Alternatively click the start button and type secpol.msc in the search function.

Browse to "Local Policies" -> "Security Options".  Now look for the entry "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level" and open it.  Click on the dropdown menu and select "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated".  Apply the settings.

On Vista Home or Home Premium there is only the way of changing the registry entry. Open the registry editor. (Start- type regedit)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlLsa]

"LmCompatibilityLevel"

Set the value to 2 and if you have further problems to 1. Restart the PC after changing the registry. Otherwise all changes you made are not valid.

Please note that NTLM has security problems.
