  • RAID 0 combines both drives into a single array offering maximum storage capacity with no redundancy.
  • RAID 5 stripes the data across all four drives, interspersing parity data to provide an efficient blend of fault tolerance and storage capacity

BUFFALO TOOLS
Buffalo Tools is a feature-rich suite of optional software included on many Buffalo DriveStation and MiniStation storage products. Any or all of the following components of Buffalo Tools may be installed on Windows PCs.

  • Buffalo's Backup Utility is an easy-to-use and fully featured backup software for Windows PCs and can be used to back up one or multiple computers with a single Buffalo external hard drive. 
  • ECO Manager is an energy efficiency tool used to conserve energy and reduce battery consumption by regulating the power usage of the hard drive, cutting power to the drive during extended periods of inactivity. 
  • RAMDISK is a simple utility that allows you to create a RAM disk on your Windows PC which creates a small, but extremely fast environment to work on files in. 
  • SecureLock software for Windows® provides complete control of the data encryption on your Buffalo external hard drive, providing password protection and software data encryption.

FAQs

Can I replace the hard drives in my DriveStation Quad by myself?

During the warranty period, please contact Buffalo Technology and we will replace any defective drives for you. The drives are easily replaced by sliding them into their bays behind the removable front panel; no tools are required. If maintaining your warranty is no longer a concern, most 7200 rpm SATA drives from reputable manufacturers will work fine in the DriveStation Quad; a screwdriver will be required to remove the hard drive tray and place it on the new drive. Because of thermal and power issues, the use of drives with speeds higher than 7200 rpm is not recommended.

Do I have data redundancy in RAID 0 mode?

No. While RAID 0 mode gives you more disk space, it will provide no data redundancy. Please, configure your DriveStation Quad for RAID 5 or RAID 10 to keep your data most secure.

Do I need to format the DriveStation Quad before I can use it?

All Buffalo DriveStation products come preformatted FAT32and are ready to use. It can also be reformatted to NTFS or HFS+ easily from any Windows® or Mac computer.

Is the DriveStation Quad compatible with Windows Server 2000, 2003 or 2008?

Yes. The DriveStation Quad works perfectly with Windows Server 2000, 2003 and 2008. The included NovaBACKUP Business Essentials is also compatible with Windows Server.

What capacity will the device have in different RAID modes?

The DriveStation Quad supports RAID0, RAID5 and RAID 10. In RAID 0, all hard drives are combined to provide maximum storage equivalent to the stated capacity of the device. However, in RAID 0 there is no data redundancy. RAID 5 provides data redundancy by using parity information on all drives and therefore provides 75% of the stated capacity (the equivalent of one hard drive is used for data redundancy). Finally, RAID 10 is available if you would like to combine the drives into a set of striped mirrors. In RAID 10, the volume is equal to 50% the advertised capacity.

Will the DriveStation Quad work on my Mac?

Yes, the DriveStation Quad will work perfectly on your Mac with OS X 10.4.11 and later. However, keep in mind that the DriveStation is pre-formatted with a FAT32 file system. Certain Mac features (TimeMachine) will require that you re-format the DriveStation with your Mac for the HFS+ file system which is very easy to do with any Mac computer.
