Buffalo's DriveStation Quad USB 3.0 Hard Drive Array is a 4-drive, RAID enabled USB 3.0 storage solution for small servers, creative professionals, offices and consumers who need large, redundant and high performance external storage. Support for hardware RAID 0, RAID 5 and RAID 10 provides flexible redundancy, capacity and performance operations. With USB 3.0 support and backward compatibility with USB 2.0, DriveStation Quad USB 3.0 works with almost any PC or Mac® computer and provides interface speeds up to 5 Gbps*.

Equipped with NovaBACKUP® Business Essentials software, DriveStation Quad USB 3.0 can back up any PC including Windows® Servers and Exchange and SQL datastores. DriveStation Quad USB 3.0 features the capacity, redundancy and performance required for demanding professional and server applications.

RAID 0/5/10 Support

DriveStation Quad provides users the option to easily protect their data using RAID redundancy.
· RAID 0 combines all four drives into a single array  offering maximum capacity with no redundancy
· RAID 5 stripes the data across all four drives, interspersing parity data to provide an efficient blend of fault tolerance and storage capacity
· RAID 10 mirrors two sets of hard drives and combines them into a single array, striping data across all mirrored sets for fault tolerance and increased performance

• Do I need to format the DriveStation Quad before I can use it?
All Buffalo DriveStation products come preformatted FAT32and are ready to use. It can also be reformatted to NTFS or HFS+ easily from any Windows® or Mac computer.
• Can I replace the hard drives in my DriveStation Quad by myself?
During the warranty period, please contact Buffalo Technology and we will replace any defective drives for you. The drives are easily replaced by sliding them into their bays behind the removable front panel; no tools are required. If maintaining your warranty is no longer a concern, most 7200 rpm SATA drives from reputable manufacturers will work fine in the DriveStation Quad; a screwdriver will be required to remove the hard drive tray and place it on the new drive. Because of thermal and power issues, the use of drives with speeds higher than 7200 rpm is not recommended.
• Do I have data redundancy in RAID 0 mode?
No. While RAID 0 mode gives you more disk space, it will provide no data redundancy. Please, configure your DriveStation Quad for RAID 5 or RAID 10 to keep your data most secure.
• Is the DriveStation Quad compatible with Windows Server 2000, 2003 or 2008?
Yes. The DriveStation Quad works perfectly with Windows Server 2000, 2003 and 2008. The included NovaBACKUP Business Essentials is also compatible with Windows Server.
• Will the DriveStation Quad work on my Mac?
Yes, the DriveStation Quad will work perfectly on your Mac with OS X 10.4.11 and later. However, keep in mind that the DriveStation is pre-formatted with a FAT32 file system. Certain Mac features (TimeMachine) will require that you re-format the DriveStation with your Mac for the HFS+ file system which is very easy to do with any Mac computer.
• What capacity will the device have in different RAID modes?
The DriveStation Quad supports RAID0, RAID5 and RAID 10. In RAID 0, all hard drives are combined to provide maximum storage equivalent to the stated capacity of the device. However, in RAID 0 there is no data redundancy. RAID 5 provides data redundancy by using parity information on all drives and therefore provides 75% of the stated capacity (the equivalent of one hard drive is used for data redundancy). Finally, RAID 10 is available if you would like to combine the drives into a set of striped mirrors. In RAID 10, the volume is equal to 50% the advertised capacity.
