DriveStation™ USB 3.0 HD-HXU3 is the next generation of Buffalo’s high speed external storage. SuperSpeed USB offers maximum interface speeds of up to 5 Gbps*, an amazing 10 times faster than USB 2.0. Ideal for editing and management of bandwidth intensive programs such as CAD or video editing software, the new DriveStation USB 3.0 can store thousands of music, video, photo and data files at lightning fast speed.
The DriveStation USB 3.0 storage solution is backward-compatible with all USB 2.0 enabled computers and notebooks, and will work with all future USB 3.0 models. Equipped with the powerful Buffalo Tools suite of software, DriveStation USB 3.0 is an extremely high performance and feature-rich storage solution.

*5 Gbps is the maximum interface rate derived from the specifications of the Universal Serial Bus 3.0 and the ExpressCard. Actual transfer rate will vary depending upon environmental factors. Data rate, features and performance may vary based on the configuration of your system and other factors. For USB 3.0 transfer speeds, a USB 3.0 interface card (IFC-PCIE2U3 or IFC-EC2U3/UC) or USB 3.0 port is required. IFC-PCIE2U3 and IFC-EC2U3/UC are sold separately.
USB 2.0 Compatibility
Buffalo's Backup Utility: An easy-to-use and fully featured backup software for Windows PCs and can be used to back up one or multiple computers with a single Buffalo external hard drive.
ECO Manager: Energy efficiency tool conserves energy and reduces battery consumption by regulating the power usage of the hard drive, cutting power to the drive during extended periods of inactivity.
RAMDISK: A simple utility that allows you to create a RAM disk on your Windows PC which creates a small, but extremely fast environment to work on files in.
SecureLock: Windows software that provides complete control of the data encryption on your Buffalo external hard drive, providing password protection and software data encryption.

DriveStation USB 3.0 supports SecureLock Software Encryption for Windows PCs. SecureLock allows users to encrypt the device using software and processing power from the Windows PC, preventing access to DriveStation's data without the specified password.

DriveStation USB 3.0 comes equipped with a hard drive installed. It is not designed nor supported for users to replace the hard drive, and doing so will void the product warranty. The internal hard drive is a standard 3.5"

DriveStation USB 3.0 HD-HXU3 cannot be used as USB backup for LinkStation or TeraStation network storage solutions. However, there are many other Buffalo DriveStation and MiniStation models that can be used as USB backup for LinkStation and TeraStation.

DriveStation USB 3.0 does not require any software to use as an external hard drive in Windows® or Mac. The Buffalo Tools suite of software is optional software that provides performance enhancing technologies, backup, and encryption amongst other features. To use these features, software components must be installed.

Yes, DriveStation USB 3.0 supports Time Machine in USB 2.0 modes. Apple does not yet offer Mac® computers equipped with USB 3.0, but when they do, DriveStation USB 3.0 will also support Time Machine over USB 3.0.

USB 3.0 as an interface is about 10 times faster than USB 2.0 (5 Gbps compared to 480 Mbps respectively). The USB 3.0 interface allows an external hard drive to perform at its maximum whereas USB 2.0 interface creates a bottle neck, restricting hard drive performance. A typical USB 2.0 hard drive offers performance about 1/3 of the actual hard drive inside the enclosure. With USB 3.0, there is no interface bottleneck, providing transfer rates about three times faster than a USB 2.0 external hard drive.
