*5 Gbps is the maximum interface rate derived from the specifications of the Universal Serial Bus 3.0 and the ExpressCard. Actual transfer rate will vary depending upon environmental factors. Data rate, features and performance may vary based on the configuration of your system and other factors. For USB 3.0 transfer speeds, a USB 3.0 interface card (IFC-PCIE2U3 or IFC-EC2U3/UC) or USB 3.0 port is required. IFC-PCIE2U3 and IFC-EC2U3/UC are sold separately.

Compact and Convenient
Buffalo Tools is a feature-rich suite of optional software included on many Buffalo DriveStation and MiniStation storage products. Any or all of the following components of Buffalo Tools may be installed on Windows PCs.
ECO Manager: Energy efficiency tool conserves energy and reduces battery consumption by regulating the power usage of the hard drive, cutting power to the drive during extended periods of inactivity.
RAMDISK: A simple utility that allows you to create a RAM disk on your Windows PC which creates a small, but extremely fast environment to work on files in.
SecureLock: Windows software that provides complete control of the data encryption on your Buffalo external hard drive, providing password protection and software data encryption.

- Can I encrypt data on MiniStation Cobalt?

MiniStation Cobalt USB 3.0 supports SecureLock Software Encryption for Windows PCs. SecureLock allows users to encrypt the device using software and processing power from the Windows PC, preventing access to Cobalt's data without the specified password.

MiniStation Cobalt comes equipped with a hard drive installed. It is not designed nor supported for users to replace the hard drive, and doing so will void the product warranty. The internal hard drive is a standard 2.5"

Yes, MiniStation Cobalt USB 3.0 features a standard USB 3.0 micro connection and supports use with user-supplied USB cables. Please note that USB 3.0 micro connections are different than USB 3.0 mini connections.

MiniStation Cobalt USB 3.0 does not require any software to use as an external hard drive in Windows® or Mac. The Buffalo Tools suite of software is optional software that provides performance enhancing technologies, backup, and encryption amongst other features. Yes, MiniStation Cobalt USB 3.0 supports Time Machine in USB 2.0 modes. Apple does not yet offer Mac® computers equipped with USB 3.0, but when they do, MiniStation Cobalt USB 3.0 will also support Time Machine over USB 3.0.

USB 3.0 as an interface is about 10 times faster than USB 2.0 (5 Gbps compared to 480 Mbps respectively). The USB 3.0 interface allows an external hard drive to perform at its maximum whereas USB 2.0 interface creates a bottle neck, restricting hard drive performance. A typical USB 2.0 hard drive offers performance about 1/3 of the actual hard drive inside the enclosure. With USB 3.0, there is no interface bottleneck, providing transfer rates about three times faster than a USB 2.0 external hard drive.
