closeYes, MiniStation Cobalt USB 3.0 features a standard USB 3.0 micro connection and supports use with user-supplied USB cables. Please note that USB 3.0 micro connections are different than USB 3.0 mini connections.
closeMiniStation Cobalt USB 3.0 does not require any software to use as an external hard drive in WindowsĂ‚® or Mac. The Buffalo Tools suite of software is optional software that provides performance enhancing technologies, backup, and encryption amongst other features. To use these features, software components must be installed.
closeYes, MiniStation Cobalt USB 3.0 supports Time Machine in USB 2.0 modes. Apple does not yet offer Mac® computers equipped with USB 3.0, but when they do, MiniStation Cobalt USB 3.0 will also support Time Machine over USB 3.0.
closeUSB 3.0 as an interface is about 10 times faster than USB 2.0 (5 Gbps compared to 480 Mbps respectively). The USB 3.0 interface allows an external hard drive to perform at its maximum whereas USB 2.0 interface creates a bottle neck, restricting hard drive performance. A typical USB 2.0 hard drive offers performance about 1/3 of the actual hard drive inside the enclosure. With USB 3.0, there is no interface bottleneck, providing transfer rates about three times faster than a USB 2.0 external hard drive.
