NETWORK FILE SHARING

LinkStation™ NAS system offers easy file sharing among multiple platforms for seamless centralized storage and backup. Share files between Windows® and Mac® computers with ease.

Access
The following OS users can access files and folders on LinkStation using the specified supported protocols.

  • Windows® and Windows Server® (SMB/CIFS)
    • Map a share on multiple computers for quick access to folders and files on LinkStation.
  • Mac OS® (AFP and SMB/CIFS)
  • Linux (SMB/CIFS)

File Sharing Security
LinkStation NAS System offers multiple levels of security to protect your content and privacy.

  • User Security: Assign username and password credentials and control folder and file level access.
  • Group Security: Create user groups and control folder and file level access.
  • Active Directory Users and Groups – Import and manage Active Directory users and groups for convenient account setup. Limited to 1000 users or groups. (LS-XL model not supported)

STORAGE MANAGEMENT

LinkStation NAS System offers several tools and technologies to help you manage your data storage the way that best suits your needs. Choose from multiple levels of RAID support for a customized blend of capacity and redundancy, instantly add storage capacity using the convenient plug and play USB accessory port and back up your LinkStation to help safeguard your important data.

RAID Management

LinkStation NAS System supports multiple levels of RAID in units with two or more hard drives. Single drive LinkStation units do not support RAID.

  • RAID 0 (2 or more drives)
    Combines all four drives into a single array offering maximum capacity with no redundancy
  • RAID 1 (2 drives)
    Mirrors two hard drives, creating an exact copy of a set of data for automatic and continuous data protection
  • RAID 5 (3 or more drives)
    Stripes the data across all four drives, interspersing parity data to provide an efficient blend of fault tolerance and storage capacity
  • RAID 10 (4 or more drives)
    Mirrors two sets of hard drives and combines them into a single array, striping data across all mirrored sets for fault tolerance and increased performance
  • Multiple RAID Arrays
    Run multiple RAID arrays on units with four drives or more:
    RAID-1 two drive array + RAID-0 two drive array
    RAID-0 three drive array + one solo drive (normal mode)
    RAID-0 two drive array + one solo drive (normal mode) + one solo drive (normal mode)
    RAID-1 two drive array + one solo drive (normal mode) + one solo drive (normal mode)
  • Normal Mode
    LinkStation units with two or more hard drives can operate in Normal Mode. In Normal Mode, each drive is accessible as an independent drive, retaining full capacity without redundancy.

Add Storage Capacity
Plug a USB hard drive into the available USB port to expand the total capacity of your LinkStation unit. External storage cannot be added to the LinkStation RAID array and only AC powered hard drives are supported.

Back up Your LinkStation
Back up and protect the data on your LinkStation NAS quickly and securely.

  • Back up to a USB hard drive. Simply plug a USB hard drive into the USB accessory port on your LinkStation NAS unit (LS-XL not supported) and easily back up the contents of your LinkStation. Only AC powered hard drives are supported.
  • Back up to another LinkStation on your home or office network (on LAN) or back up remotely over the Internet (with IP).
    • Compression and Encryption Available

DEVICE BACKUP

LinkStation NAS system can be used in a variety of ways to back up and protect your important data. Data loss can occur unexpectedly; schedule regular backups and protect all of your data, down to the last byte.

NovaBACKUP® Professional
Back up Windows PCs with NovaBACKUP® Professional backup software. Included with each LinkStation NAS unit is five free licenses of NovaBACKUP®, an easy-to-use backup solution that automatically backs up your personal documents along with your favorite photos, music and important email files safely and securely. Back up PCs, notebooks and workstations.

Mac OS X: Time Machine®
LinkStation NAS System supports Time Machine for Mac users, including Mac OS X Lion. Schedule backups from one or multiple Mac computers on your network.

Direct Copy Function
Direct Copy allows you to copy data from an external USB device, such as a digital camera or flash drive, directly to a LinkStation NAS using the LinkStation USB accessory port. Conveniently copy movies, music photos and more directly to your LinkStation without the use of a computer. (LS-XL, LS410D, LS420D & LS421DE models not supported)


CLOUD SERVICES

LinkStation NAS OS helps you create a secure, personal cloud environment for your content. Upload photos to the Web, wirelessly transfer images from your camera and access and share content remotely.

Flickr Synchronization
(Supported on LinkStation Pro LS-VL models only)
Automatically sync and back up digital photos that are placed on your LinkStation Pro directly to your Flickr account. Simply enable Flickr support, create a shared folder and authenticate your account to get started. Any photos saved in the shared folder linked to your Flickr account will automatically sync in both places.

  • Automatically download photos from your Flickr account to your LinkStation NAS
  • Automatically upload photos from a designated LinkStation folder to your Flickr account

Eye-Fi Support
Supported on LinkStation Pro LS-VL models only)
Integrated Eye-Fi Manager allows users of Eye-Fi equipped cameras to automatically transfer digital photos from the camera wirelessly to any supported LinkStation Pro NAS device. Photos transferred from an Eye-Fi SD card to a supported LinkStation are transmitted through a web-based Eye-Fi service, and not directly over the LAN.

WebAccess Connect
Buffalo's free WebAccess service allows you to create a personal cloud for easy remote access and file sharing with anyone, anywhere over the Internet. Your data remains securely stored in one place on your home network, but you can access it quickly from any computer, tablet or smartphone device over the Web.

With WebAccess Connect, you can connect to a remote Buffalo NAS device running Buffalo WebAccess and synchronize the data between the two NAS devices. Synchronize a local LAN share with data on a remote LinkStation NAS over the Web.


REMOTE AND MOBILE ACCESS

LinkStation NAS System includes features that make it easy for users to access and share files anywhere, with anyone at anytime. Create a personal cloud for simple sharing or configure an FTP server for remote access and sharing.

WebAccess
Buffalo's WebAccess service allows you to create a personal cloud for easy remote access and file sharing with anyone, anywhere over the Internet. Your data remains securely stored in one place on your home network, but you can access it quickly from any computer, tablet or smartphone device over the Web. Sharing is as easy as sending a link to your friends and family; they can securely access only the files you've selected for them to see.

FTP Server
LinkStation NAS System offers an optional FTP server allowing users to securely access and share files on their LinkStation NAS device from outside the local network. The FTP server uses the same security settings as LinkStation user/group network file sharing.

LinkStation NAS System is equipped with multiple integrated multimedia servers for seamless streaming and playback of your favorite movies, music and more.

DLNA Certified® Media Server
LinkStation NAS System is equipped with a DLNA server for easily interconnecting digital devices. Stream digital content to any DLNA or UPnP media player on your network.

LinkStation NAS System also includes a Squeezebox server for integration with Logitech® Squeezebox. Users can enable the Squeezebox server to play back music stored on their LinkStation to their Squeezebox network music player.


BITTORRENT DOWNLOADER

LinkStation NAS System includes µTorrent, a powerful BitTorrent client for easy torrent file management.  Manage P2P file transfers directly from your LinkStation without the use of a dedicated PC. You can download and share files directly from your LinkStation and you can manage downloads from anywhere using the simple Web-based download manager.

Copy and paste BitTorrent URLs directly into the download manager from your computer or mobile device.

To access and use µTorrent from outside your home or office, firewall configuration is required.


USB DEVICE SHARING

(Requires USB accessory port)
LinkStation NAS System allows users to share USB devices over the network via the USB accessory port on the back of the LinkStation unit.

Network-USB Server  
(Supported on LinkStation Pro LS-VL models only)
Share USB devices attached to your LinkStation USB port with PC and Mac computers on the network. Connect up to 15 devices using a USB hub. Any attached device is accessible by one PC or Mac computer at a time. To access attached devices, connecting PC and Mac computers must install and run Network-USB Navigator software.

Works with USB hard drives, printers, LinkStation DirectCopy Feature

Print Server
Share basic printing support to client PC and Mac computers on your network. Connect one printer at a time to your LinkStation and share basic printing functions with anyone on your network.

  • Mounts as a shared printer in the LinkStation
  • Only provides basic printing functions
    • No multi-function features
    • No ink or status reporting from the printer to clients

NOTIFICATION CENTER

LinkStation NAS System includes an email notification system. Users can schedule daily reports and receive updates when settings are changed or an error occurs.

Sleep Timer
To save energy you can specify designated times to put the LinkStation into standby mode. In standby mode, the hard disk(s) and LEDs are turned off. You can schedule up to three timers to manage your LinkStation power state at pre-determined times. To use the sleep timer, turn your LinkStation power mode to the ON position. (LS410D, LS420D & LS421DE models not supported)

TeraSearch
Searching for files on different NAS devices is routinely difficult since Windows and Mac search must search every file over the network. TeraSearch indexes all of its stored content and provides a web-based search portal to quickly find data on it.

DFS (Distributed File Space Namespace)
Combine SMB/CIFS shares from multiple NAS devices and servers into one tree. This provides a unified view of shared folders for simplified navigation and increased administrative flexibility.

TeraStation Failover
(TeraStation Pro models only)
If your system configuration includes data replication from on TeraStation Pro unit to another, you can set up failover to automatically switch main operation over to the redundant TeraStation Pro if the main unit ever becomes inaccessible. Within one minute, the backup TeraStation Pro automatically assumes the role of the main TeraStation Pro with no disruption and no IT intervention. Data can be continuously accessed without any notice of the failover.

Amazon S3 Backup
TeraStation NAS System supports Amazon S3 backup, a fee-based online storage service from Amazon. Easily enable support in the TeraStation Web Admin and select a share for backup.

Trend Micro Anti-virus Support
With a 1, 3 or 5 year purchase of a Trend Micro anti-virus subscription, data in all or select shares can be continually scanned for viruses, quarantining viruses and protecting the NAS users from virus infection.


ADVANCED NETWORKING

TeraStation NAS System supports advanced networking options using dual gigabit Ethernet ports for greater performance and reliability.

Multi-homing
With TeraStation NAS System, you can configure a TeraStation on multiple subnets and select the service level on which network services/functions operate.
