Solution: Backup and Replicate using Arcserve UDP and Buffalo WSS NAS


Applies to WSH5610 / WS5020 series

Preparation:
Arcserve UDP version 6.5 or later
Nodes to be backed-up
Buffalo WSS WSH5610 / WS5020 as UDP Console and Backup Recovery Point Server
(Optional) Another Buffalo WSS as the Replication Recovery Point Server

 

Install Arcserve UDP
1.    Install Arcserve UDP on the Buffalo WSS NAS refer to this Arcserve article.

 

Add a Data Store to the Buffalo WSH5610 / WS5020

1.    Log into Arcserve UDP console, and click the resources tab.
From the left pane, navigate to Destinations, and click Recovery Point Servers
The Buffalo WSS NAS should already be listed as a Recovery Point Server(RPS) by default after the installation.

 

2.    Select the Buffalo WSS RPS, and click the Actions drop-down list. Then Click Add a Data Store.

3.    Specify the Data Store Folder and the Destination Folders to the WSS local storage and click Save.

4.    A WSS NAS RPS with data store is ready for use.

 


(Optional) Add a Destination for Replication


Add another remote Buffalo WSS as Replication Recovery Point Server for offsite replication.


1.    To Add a recovery point server to the Arcserve UDP Console, log into Arcserve UDP console, and click the resources tab.
From the left pane, navigate to Destinations, and click Recovery Point Servers.
Then click Add a Recovery Point Server at the center pane.

2.    Enter the following details:
Node Name/IP Address
Username and Password

Click Save to finish.
After the deployment finishes, the Replication recovery point server is added.

 

3.    Add a Data Store
At the Recovery Point Servers page, select the Replication Recovery Point Server we just added, right-click or click the Actions drop-down list.
Then click Add a Data Store.

 

4.    Specify the Data Store Folder and the Destination Folders to the target WSS storage and click Save.

5.    The data store of the replication RPS is created and gets displayed on the center pane.


Create a Plan with Backup Task
1.    From the left pane, navigate to Plans, and click All Plans.
Then click Add a Plan at the center pane.

2.    Enter a plan name.
Select the desired Task Type from the drop-down list, we will use “Backup: Agent-Based Windows” in our following scenario.

3.    From the Source tab, click “Add Windows Node

4.    Add one or multiple Windows node to the list and click Save.

5.    Confirm the Backup Node list.
You can select to Backup all volumes or selected volumes from the Protection Type at the bottom.

6.    Switch to Destination tab, select the Buffalo WSS to be the Backup Recovery Point Server. In our scenario, it should be the unit that has the UDP Console installed.
Then confirm the Data Store is the one we created previously on the WSS unit.

7.    At the Schedule tab, specify the Backup schedule and Retention policy.
 
If you are adding a Replicate Task to the Plan, continue to the next step. If not, click Save at the upper right to complete the task creation.


(Optional) Add a Replicate Task to the Plan

1.    At the same “Add a Plan” window, click Add a Task from the left pane. A new task will be added.
From the Task Type drop-down menu, select Replicate.

2.    You do not have to configure the Source tab in the new Replicate task because it reflects the backup destination from the Backup task.

3.    At the Destination tab, enter the recovery point server details.
In our scenario we will use the remote Replication Recovery Point Server which we created earlier.
Refer to this article for more configuration details.

4.    At the Schedule tab, add a Replication Job Schedule and configure Retention Settings.

5.    Click the Advanced tab and enable Email alerts if needed.
Click Save at the upper right to finish the task creation.

6.    The plan is saved and the backup/replication task is deployed to the backup/replication destination.

7.    After deployment successful you can start the task manually or wait for the scheduled task to begin.
