• Can I use DriveStation Axis Velocity USB 3.0 with a PC or Mac®?
DriveStation Axis Velocity USB 3.0 can be used with PC and Mac computers out of the box with no installation or formatting necessary for Windows PCs. By default DriveStation Axis Velocity is formatted in NTFS. It requires formatting by Mac OS by using Mac's included "Disk Utility" software (Inside the Utilities folders in Applications). Also, there is 3rd party software for Mac OS that allows Mac to support NTFS. Additionally, the Buffalo Tools and the hardware encryption feature only work on Windows® PCs.
• Can I replace the hard drive in DriveStation Axis Velocity USB 3.0 by myself?
DriveStation Axis Velocity USB 3.0 comes equipped with a hard drive installed. It is not designed for nor does it support user hard drive replacement. Doing so will void the product warranty. The internal hard drive is a standard 3.5” 7,200 rpm SATA HDD.
• How much faster is USB 3.0 than USB 2.0, and in real-world portable hard drive performance, what does it mean?
USB 3.0 as an interface is about 10 times faster than USB 2.0 (5 Gbps compared to 480 Mbps respectively). The USB 3.0 interface allows an external hard drive to perform at its maximum whereas USB 2.0 interface creates a bottle neck, restricting hard drive performance. A typical USB 2.0 hard drive offers performance about 1/3 of the actual hard drive inside the enclosure. With USB 3.0, there is no interface bottleneck and coupled with a 7,200 RPM hard drive, it provides transfer rates about four to five times faster than a USB 2.0 external hard drive.
• How does TurboPC work?
DriveStation Axis Velocity USB 3.0 features Buffalo Tools and TurboPC. TurboPC also includes the TurboCopy component. Together, these two pieces of Windows® software enhance the USB connection between your PC and the drive and adds an additional file manager tool for copying files quicker. By utilizing the PC's high-speed RAM, data can be transferred much more efficiently and quickly. Depending on the environment, TurboPC and Turbo Copy can provide file transfers over twice as fast. On average, gains up to 4X are typical.
