FAQs

Can I replace the hard drives in my DriveStation Quattro by myself?

During the warranty period, please send the unit back to Buffalo Technology and we will replace any defective drives for you. If maintaining your warranty is no longer a concern, most 7200 rpm SATA drives from reputable manufacturers will work fine in the DriveStation. Because of thermal and power issues, the use of drives with speeds higher than 7200 rpm is not recommended.

Do I need to format the DriveStation Quattro before I can use it?

All Buffalo DriveStation products come preformatted and are ready to use.

Is the DriveStation compatible with Windows Server 2000, 2003 or 2008?

Yes. The DriveStation Quattro works perfectly with Windows Server 2000, 2003 and 2008. However, some of the included software (Memeo AutoBackup) is not compatible with server versions of Windows.

What capacity will the device have in different RAID modes?

The DriveStation Quattro supports RAID0, RAID1 and RAID5. In RAID0, all hard drives are combined to provide maximum storage equivalent to the stated capacity of the device. However, in RAID0 there is no data redundancy. RAID5 provides data redundancy by using parity information on all drives and therefore provides 75% of the stated capacity (the equivalent of one hard drive is used for data redundancy). Finally, RAID1 is available if you would like to combine two drives into a single, redundant volume equal to 25% the advertised capacity. You can create two individual RAID1 volumes.

Will the DriveStation Duo work on my Mac?

Yes, the DriveStation Quattro will work perfectly on your Mac with OS X 10.4.11 and later. However, keep in mind that the DriveStation is pre-formatted with a FAT32 file system. Certain Mac features (TimeMachine) will require that you re-format the DriveStation with your Mac for the HFS Plus file system. Also, the RAID changing utility has to be run on a PC. If you need to change your RAID mode, connect the unit to a PC, run the configuration and then connect the unit back to your Mac.
