MiniStation Cobalt USB 3.0 is the latest generation of Buffalo’s external storage solutions, delivering interface speeds 10 times faster than USB 2.0.  Designed for mobility, MiniStation Cobalt HD-PEU3 can store and move tons of photo, video, music and data files at previously unavailable speeds in a compact and lightweight form, perfect for travel. Plus, the Cobalt is backward-compatible with USB 2.0 and it works with PC and Mac®, so you can access your files from nearly any computer. Included with the Cobalt is Buffalo Tools, a feature-rich suite of PC performance enhancement tools. With Buffalo Tools, users can boost transfer performance by an additional 25% using TurboPC, conserve energy and battery consumption by utilizing ECO Manager and back up PCs with the easy to use Buffalo's Backup Utility. • Can I replace the hard drive in the MiniStation Cobalt by myself?
MiniStation Cobalt comes equipped with a hard drive installed. It is not designed nor supported for users to replace the hard drive, and doing so will void the product warranty. The internal hard drive is a standard 2.5” SATA HDD.
• How much faster is USB 3.0 than USB 2.0, and in real-world portable hard drive performance, what does it mean?
USB 3.0 as an interface is about 10 times faster than USB 2.0 (5 Gbps compared to 480 Mbps respectively). The USB 3.0 interface allows an external hard drive to perform at its maximum whereas USB 2.0 interface creates a bottle neck, restricting hard drive performance. A typical USB 2.0 hard drive offers performance about 1/3 of the actual hard drive inside the enclosure. With USB 3.0, there is no interface bottleneck, providing transfer rates about three times faster than a USB 2.0 external hard drive.
• Does MiniStation Cobalt USB 3.0 support Apple Time Machine®?
Yes, MiniStation Cobalt USB 3.0 supports Time Machine in USB 2.0 modes. Apple does not yet offer Mac® computers equipped with USB 3.0, but when they do, MiniStation Cobalt USB 3.0 will also support Time Machine over USB 3.0.
• Do I need any software to use MiniStation Cobalt?
MiniStation Cobalt USB 3.0 does not require any software to use as an external hard drive in Windows® or Mac. The Buffalo Tools suite of software is optional software that provides performance enhancing technologies, backup, and encryption amongst other features. To use these features, software components must be installed.
• Can I use a longer USB cable with MiniStation Cobalt USB 3.0?
Yes, MiniStation Cobalt USB 3.0 features a standard USB 3.0 micro connection and supports use with user-supplied USB cables. Please note that USB 3.0 micro connections are different than USB 3.0 mini connections.
• Can I encrypt data on MiniStation Cobalt?
MiniStation Cobalt USB 3.0 supports SecureLock Software Encryption for Windows PCs. SecureLock allows users to encrypt the device using software and processing power from the Windows PC, preventing access to Cobalt's data without the specified password.
