• Is MiniStation Extreme ruggedized?
MiniStation Extreme includes a shock absorber chassis designed to protect the drive from shocks and drops seen in the everyday world. Its shock protection is based on US Military Grade standards (MIL-SPEC) and is generally designed to protect it from drops up to 2 meters.
• How much faster is USB 3.0 than USB 2.0, and in real-world portable hard drive performance, what does it mean?
USB 3.0 as an interface is about 10 times faster than USB 2.0 (5 Gbps compared to 480 Mbps respectively). The USB 3.0 interface allows an external hard drive to perform at its maximum whereas USB 2.0 interface creates a bottle neck, restricting hard drive performance. A typical USB 2.0 hard drive offers performance about 1/3 of the actual hard drive inside the enclosure. With USB 3.0, there is no interface bottleneck, providing transfer rates about three times faster than a USB 2.0 external hard drive.
• Can I replace the hard drives in MiniStation Extreme by myself?
MiniStation Extreme comes equipped with a hard drive installed. It is not designed nor supported for users to replace the hard drive, and doing so will void the product warranty. The internal hard drive is a standard 2.5'' SATA HDD.
• Does MiniStation Extreme work with Mac OS?
Yes, MiniStation Extreme supports Mac OS X. However, many components of Buffalo Tools may not work in Mac OS. By default MiniStation Extreme is formatted in NTFS. It requires formatting by Mac OS by using Mac's included "Disk Utility" software (Inside the Utilities folders in Applications). Also, there is 3rd party software for Mac OS that allows Mac to support NTFS.
• Does MiniStation Extreme support Apple Time Machine?
Yes, MiniStation Extreme supports Time Machine. Please see the above bullet regarding format support for Mac OS.
• How fast is the hard drive inside MiniStation Extreme?
MiniStation Extreme features a high-speed 5,400rpm SATA hard drive.
• Do I need any software to use MiniStation Extreme?
MiniStation Extreme does not require any software to use as an external hard drive in Windows or Mac. The Buffalo Tools suite of software is optional software that provides performance enhancing technologies, backup, and encryption amongst other features. To use these features, software components must be used.
• Can I use a longer USB cable with MiniStation Extreme?
Yes, MiniStation Extreme features a standard Mini-USB 3.0 connection and the integrated cable is removable for use with user-supplied USB cables. Included in the package is USB 3.0 extension cable.
• How does hardware encryption work on MiniStation Extreme?
MiniStation Extreme features a hardware encryption chip that encrypts all data on the hard drive. The encryption is always on, but it is completely transparent to the user and device until a password is enabled. Once the password is enabled, it MUST be provided to access the data. It cannot be circumvented by removing the hard drive from the MiniStation Extreme. The data on the device is encrypted by the highest standard of encryption available on the market today. Also, if you do not use the password and remove the drive from the enclosure, the data will still be encrypted and inaccessible outside of the MiniStation Extreme's chassis.
